    Avid Technology Inc. subsidiary M-Audio has introduced the Black Box, a new device for guitarists that combines amp modeling, beat-synced effects, guitar and mic preamps and drum tracks with an audio interface designed for recording on a Mac or a PC. Co-developed by M-Audio and Roger Linn Design, the Black Box can be used standalone or as a plug-in hosted by popular music software — Black Box's software supports Core Audio and ASIO. It's compatible with Mac OS X v10.3.7 or higher and requires a G3/500MHz or faster, 512MB RAM and USB. It ships this month for US$329.95.

    Edirol ships R-4 recorder with BWF format support

    Edirol Corp. on Friday announced that its R-4 recorder, which was first introduced last October, is now shipping. The company has added support for Broadcast Wave Format (BWF), which enables the R-4 to write the metadata required to comply with that standard. BWF files can be used in any playback device or audio editor that is compatible with the WAV format. The R-4 features a 40GB hard drive and USB 2.0 connectivity, with the ability to hold up to 17 hours of material at 24-bit/96kHz quality or up to 58 hours at 16-bit/44.1kHz, which is comparable to a CD.

    Terra Soft boots Linux from iPods, FireWire drives

    Terra Soft, which develops Linux solutions for use on Macintosh computers and sells Macs with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed, on Wednesday announced support for bootable iPods and FireWire drives. The external devices, both of which are available from Terra Soft, contain a full installation of Yellow Dog Linux on a partition, enabling users to add their applications, data and /home directory information and boot from any G4 or G5 computer while leaving internal drives unchanged.
